Palü / Raven and Sun
James Johnson / Corinne Weidmann
Acrylics on canvas
90 × 120 cm, 2021
This painting continues an intercultural dialogue through the shared language of symbolism. The Tlingit figure of Raven — a cultural hero, transformer and bringer of light — is placed in relation to Palü, an Alpine mountain embedded in European landscape memory and myth.
Rather than illustrating a narrative, the work creates a space where distinct symbolic systems meet without hierarchy. Palü, Raven and Sun remain culturally specific, entering a visual conversation without being translated into one another. The painting explores how landscape, myth and identity can resonate across cultures through artistic collaboration.
